Our Philosophy

Our
Philosophy

At Sankofa Birth and Women’s Care, we believe:

Birth is a normal physiologic process.

Most people can give birth without medical intervention.

Homebirth with a skilled birth attendant is the safest option for low-risk pregnancies and labor.

Diversity should be honored and all family types should be celebrated.

Community-based midwifery care, along with consultation and collaboration with other medical professionals, provides the best outcomes for mothers and babies.

A healthy midwife-client relationship is based on mutual trust and respect.

Midwives should be accessible to every person seeking that model of care.

Sankofa Bird

What is
Sankofa?

Sankofa is an African word from the Akan people of Ghana that translates to "Go back and get it.” It also refers to the Asante Adinkra symbol represented by a bird with its head turned backwards while its feet face forward carrying a precious egg in its mouth.

Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, "It is not taboo to go back for that which you have forgotten." In America, the traditions of birthing at home, and with the aid of women, have been forgotten.

Through Sankofa Birth and Women's Care, we strive to reclaim the traditional ways of birthing and continue to pass that knowledge on to future generations.

Why Choose a Home Birth Midwife?

Midwifery care is centered around the normalcy of pregnancy and invites you to take an active role in your health, pregnancy, and childbirth decisions. Choosing a midwife means choosing personalized, family-centered, comprehensive care. To us, you are a person, not a patient.

Homebirth is the safest option for low-risk clients. It is empowering, intimate, and magical. There is a lot of freedom in birthing at home, in your own space, without worry of unnecessary medical interventions. Homebirth midwives respect the process of normal physiological birth and know how to support you and your family throughout the experience. We are there for you from the first appointment to your six-week postpartum checkup and all the milestones in-between.

The Sankofa Birth Squad is committed to being a calm, reassuring presence at your homebirth while providing support, information, and a safe environment. We help facilitate a positive and empowering birth experience by allowing birth to occur naturally.

Tina was absolutely wonderful and provided a world of encouragement. As a plus-size mom, I especially appreciated her willingness to treat me as an individual and not just as a number on the scale.

— C.C.

My experience with Tina and her team was the most meaningful and memorable experience I have ever had. Tina took time to meet every need with authenticity and care. She and her team made my entire birthing experience, from the appointments to the time of birth, comfortable, peaceful and relaxed, which was great considering that I have extreme anxiety when it comes to healthcare professionals. She eased and melted all of that fear away. She is thorough, she knows her profession and makes sure to meet your needs as a client in a loving way. I am thankful that I found them. The care was intimate and not rushed and next to no other experience I have ever had. Oh and when they came to deliver my Jada! FAMILY. They became family. I am pretty extra and they made themselves right at home with my "extraness".  Just an amazing experience. I love Sankofa and will not have another Midwife deliver my next. Thank you for being so amazing at what you do and selecting such an amazing team.
